City of Edinburgh volleyball club got their John Syer Trophy challenge off to a good start with a comfortable enough 25-13, 25-17, 25-17 win over Beacon Fire at Liberton High School.

Having lost last year’s final to Kilmarnock Blaze, who are no longer around, City want to go one step further this season.

City’s women’s team, without the talismanic Mel Coutts who faces several months on the sidelines with a knee injury, also came through in straight-sets victory against Kyle Team Ayrshire.

But, after taking the first two sets in convincing fashion, they found themselves 15-20 down in the third.

The team had to dig deep to come through 25-8, 25-14, 25-23 to preserve their unbeaten record.

Edinburgh Jets also enjoyed a successful weekend. In the men’s John Syer Trophy, Jets beat Dundee 25-22, 25-13, 26-24 in a hard-fought match.

In the women’s competition, Jets beat Jets II 25-6, 25-21, 25-14.
