NEW-LOOK City of Edinburgh opened the defence of their men’s Schelde Sports Scottish Volleyball League title with a comfortable win over Dundee.

With only three players remaining from the team that won the league last season, the capital side made light of the changes to win 25-10, 25-17, 25-21.

It put them joint top of the league with city rivals Edinburgh Jets, who were similarly convincing in their 25-16, 25-21, 25-19, home win over Beacon Fire.

Player-coach Martyn Johnstone was calling the shots for the first time and there was some concern in the second set when Beacon led 16-11 at the second technical timeout.

But Jets recovered to take the set and the third set was straightforward enough with Abdoulle Bah and Kris Soberiacki dominating at the net.

In the women’s first division, City of Edinburgh opened the defence of their title with a thumping 25-8, 25-7, 25-7 win over Edinburgh Jets II.

Edinburgh, who won all four domestic honours last season, sent a clear warning to the rest of the league for the new season. Edinburgh Jets lost a tight four-set match with City of Glasgow Ragazzi 23-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-27.
