Crucial tennis clash for East of Scotland women

Have your say

MHAIRI BEATTIE and Emma Devine completed another hat-trick of victories but it was insufficient to help East of Scotland women as they were squeezed out 4-5 by Buckinghamshire in Group One of the AEGON county tennis championships at Eastbourne.

East now face a crucial clash with Warwickshire, with their hopes of retaining top-flight status on the line after posting one win from three so far.

The other East rubber came from Millie Stretton and Sarah Mcfadyen, playing her 19th consecutive county week.

The East team was completed by Kirsty Venter, who partnered Jo Stevenson in the opening round and then Sonia Vickers for the final two ties.

Skipper Beattie said: “It’s so good to be here in Group 1, and even though it’s our first year in the group we are really in the mix. Some of the girls were being hard on themselves after the latest matches but we had a chat at lunch and I just told the girls to remember to enjoy the experience.

“When you come down for practice in the morning and there are all 18 grass-courts full, and the sun is shining, it’s an amazing sight and you think ‘this is great’.”

East men lost 8-1 to Suffolk. Evan McIntosh and Andy Melrose had the only win.
