Edinburgh curlers Gina Aitken and Bruce Mouat are both just two wins away from completing a golden double after qualifying for the medal play-offs at the Scottish Championships in Perth.

The duo claimed national junior titles in Aberdeen last month, and they are still in contention to add the senior crowns this weekend.

Aitken could even afford to lose her last round-robin match 10-5 to Lockerbie’s former world junior champion Hannah Fleming, although the defeat left her in third place overall. She now goes through to tonight’s semi-final to face the loser of the clash between Fleming and tournament favourite Eve Muirhead.

Mouat continued to excel yesterday, beating junior rival Stuart Taylor 8-4 to finish second overall with seven wins out of nine. Another victory over Olympic silver medallist David Murdoch will book his place in tomorrow’s final, although he will need to banish negative memories of Monday night’s 7-1 defeat to the two-time world champion from Lockerbie.
