Edinburgh canoeist David Florence lost his grip on one of his two world titles when he sensationally failed to qualify for tomorrow’s C2 doubles semi-finals at the World Slalom Championships at Deep Creek Lake in Maryland last night.

The Forth Canoe Club favourite and Rich Hounslow struck gold in Prague last year, but the Olympic silver medallists put themselves in difficulty yesterday when they missed gate 17 out of 24 to incur an expensive 50 second penalty on their first run. Their second attempt was timed at a sufficiently-quick 117.87secs, but three clipped barriers cost them six seconds in total and left them down in 22nd place, 1.47secs outside the all-important top 20 qualifiers.

Florence has the chance to redeem himself when he continues the defence of his C1 singles crown in today’s semi-finals and hopefully final.
