Edinburgh’s Doug Kempsell helped Scotland’s men towards a place in tomorrow’s semi-finals at the European Squash Team Championships in Herning, Denmark yesterday.
The No.4 seeds beat fifth seeds Holland 3-1 in their opening Pool A fixture, but the result was in doubt until the final rubber in which Kempsell defeated Sebastiaan Weenink 11-6, 11-8, 11-9. The 22-year-old trailed 6-2 in game three before surging to victory as Scotland scored a priceless win over their main rivals.
Scottish No.1 Alan Clyne and Paisley’s Kevin Moran had earlier outclassed Laurens-Jan Anjema and Bart Ravelli in straight games, but Greg Lobban lost his match with Piedro Schweertman.
The Scots face eighth-ranked Wales next with top seeds and defending champions England to follow.
