City of Edinburgh are shaping up as serious title contenders after handing Glasgow Mets their first defeat in the men’s Scottish Volleyball League.
The capital side survived a fightback by Mets to take the three points 25-19, 24-26, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9 at Queensferry High School and go joint top of the table.
In a three-way tie, South Ayrshire – who beat Beacon in straight sets 25-22, 25-16, 25-13 – lead the table on sets difference from Mets and Edinburgh.
Edinburgh’s young side have punched above their weight this season and, in a transitional year, can only get stronger.
City of Glasgow Ragazzi are also in the picture but defending champions Edinburgh Jets have a lot to do if they are to make any impact on the title chase.
In the women’s first division, Glasgow’s Su Ragazzi eased to a straight sets victory over North Lanarkshire.
Edinburgh Jets moved up to third, winning a tight match at champions City of Edinburgh 25-22, 25-23, 26-24. It was City’s third defeat in five league matches and their crown is slipping.
