COLIN CLARKE today saluted his side after Grange stormed back from two goals down with only 25 minutes left to secure a 4-3 hockey win.

Coach Clarke’s men looked dead and buried when Grove Menzieshill led 3-1 at Peffermill on Saturday thanks to goals from Michael Ross, Gavin Tomlinson and Ross McPherson.

But the Edinburgh side refused to give in and he said: “We kept plugging away and earned a win, which is a great start to our campaign.”

Scottish international hit-man Cammy Fraser scored the winner in the dying minutes.

Earlier, the home side had been 3-1 down to the Dundee club, who opened the scoring through Ross but pulled it back to 1-1 by the break thanks to a strike from Colin McIver. Two goals in a minute early in the second-half saw the momentum swing towards Grove Menzieshill, Tomlinson and McPherson doing the damage. But Martin Kelly gave Grange hope and Phil Sully levelled to set up the grandstand finish.

Clydesdale ended up going down 2-0 to Inverleith after goals from Derek Salmond and Chris Bird.

Newly-promoted CALA Edinburgh went 3-0 down 24 minutes into their joust with Glasgow-based Western, Dougie Simpson netting twice and experienced midfielder Euan Miller slotting home.

But Phil Rae pulled one back nine minutes later and 15-year-old Angus Robb touched home their second a minute from the break. But Simpson’s third after 52 minutes finished the game.
