Edinburgh’s James Heatly cruised through to tonight’s men’s 3m springboard final after finishing just two places out of the bronze medal position in this morning’s preliminaries at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.

The 17-year-old, who finished ninth in the final of the men’s 1m springboard last night, produced a flawless display to finish fifth from a slightly larger field of 17, easing his way into the which gets underway at 6pm.

Although the George Watson’s pupil indicated last night he doesn’t consider himself a medal hope for his favoured event, he now admits he might just have to rethink his targets after such a convincing display.

Heatly, who recorded another personal best of 18 points, said: “Yeah, it’s exciting. It’s just the way the sport is as it is just so unpredictable. I know a few people missed a few dives this morning so that could be me tonight. I’ll just have to wait and see what happens but I am just going to go and try and get another PB.”
