Hockey: Grange have more to give after opening win

Have your say

Grange, the Scottish Cup and play-off champions, have room for improvement despite edging Dundee Wanderers 2-1 on Tayside in their Division One hockey opener.

Having gone behind to a Bobby Ralph goal in the first 15 minutes, efforts from Australian midfielder Arin Doig and Callum Milne inside the first 15 minutes of the second half earned the points.

Colin Clarke, Grange’s coach, said: “It’s a long season and teams will take points from each other but we’ve got three points on the board.”

Elsewhere, Edinburgh University drew 3-3 at Gordonians with Scottish internationalist Dan Coultas missing a penalty flick late-on.

And Hillhead edged West of Scotland rivals Western 3-2 thanks to goals from Craig Paterson, Andrew Hilton and Graeme Campbell.

In women’s Division One, newly-promoted Erskine Stewart’s Melville celebrated their first ever win in the top flight when they demolished CALA Edinburgh 5-1. And Edinburgh University opened the defence of the league title with a 12-1 home victory over GHK Ladies with Grove Menzieshill edging Western Wildcats 2-1 and Dundee Wanderers beating Milne Craig Clydesdale Western 3-0 on Tayside.
