Mike Leonard praised his George Watson’s College squad after their convincing victory over city rivals Edinburgh Academy to lift the Quiller Cheviot Scottish Schools Cup.
Leonard’s men won 5-0, with three goals coming in three second-half minutes at Glasgow’s National Hockey Centre.
Rob Speirs scored a double and Leonard, a former Scotland captain, said: “The boys carried out the game-plan to perfection and played really well.”
Andrew Cockburn put Watson’s ahead after just three minutes, but from then on Accies settled and kept the score to 1-0 at the interval.
However, they were caught cold early in the second period as Andrew Dumble put Watson’s 2-0 up. That strike opened the floodgates as Spiers grabbed a double in between a strike from Sean Horgan,
Chris Duncan, director of hockey at Edinburgh Academy, said: “It’s been an incredible journey for the boys to get to the final. Watson’s capitalised on our mistakes and deserve credit for their performance.”
In the girls’ final, George Heriot’s defeated Glasgow High 1-0 thanks to a goal from Robin Robeson.
