Broxburn judoka Chris Sherrington gave himself a timely boost in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games when he won a silver medal at the Havana Grand Prix in Cuba.

The Olympian lost in the final of the Over-100kg event to Russian Renat Saidov, who also beat him out of gold at the World Cup in Samoa.

The heavyweight, who competed at London 2012, first beat Cuban Arlendy Morales and then claimed victory over Georgian Adam Okashvili to book a place in the semi-final with another Georgian, Levani Matiashvili – winning all of his fights by ippon.

He lost to Saidov by waza-ari, but it was a good day’s work at the start of the new Olympic cycle for Rio 2016.
