Tough task awaits Sally Conway on road to Rio 2016

With ranking points up for grabs ahead of Rio 2016, the world’s elite will gather in Germany in the first major event of the year.

World No.1 Kim Polling (Netherlands) will start as favourite for the Under-70kg title ahead of German Laura Vargas Koch, the world No.2, and Canadian Kelita Zupancic, currently ranked at four.

Onix Cortes Aldama, from Cuba, a bronze medallist at last year’s World Championships, is also in the 37-strong field and Conway’s GB team-mate Megan Fletcher, the Commonwealth champion, is also a threat.

Coatbridge’s Louise Renicks, the Commonwealth gold medallist, competes in the Under-52kg event which has attracted an entry of 39, including Brazilian Erika Miranda, a silver and bronze medallist at the World Championships.

Edinburgh’s Commonwealth heavyweight champion Sarah Adlington is aiming for points in the Over-78kg event but again there is a world-class entry including the 2013 European champion Lucie Louette Kanning from France and world silver medallist Andreea Chitu of Romania.
