DALKEITH’S Aiden Moffat, who only passed his driving test yesterday, will mount a full-scale assault on the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship next year.

Moffat — who became the youngest ever BTCC racer in August when he made his championship debut at Knockhill aged 16 — is set to race for the family-run Aiden Moffat Racing squad after making an impression in the tintop series.

The team has purchased the RML-built NGTC Chevrolet Cruze, plus all its assets and spares. The car was previously owned and raced by Andy Neate in 2013.

Moffat already has experience of racing — albeit briefly — in a Cruze. He drove the Finesse Motorsport S2000 Chevrolet Cruze at Knockhill, but the outing was peppered with technical and reliability problems.

He then made his NGTC debut, driving a VW Passat with Team Hard, in the final two rounds of the season, scoring championship points at both Silverstone and Brands Hatch.

Now the 17-year-old is focusing even further up the field.

“There is no point me turning up to run at the rear of the field,” the youngster said. “I only race to win, and I hope to do that at some point in the Cruze — it is a fantastic car.”
