Murrayfield curlers Kerry Barr and Gina Aitken can seize the opportunity of a lifetime as the Scottish Championship gets underway at Dumfries Ice Bowl tonight.

Eve Muirhead’s Winter Olympics commitments mean she cannot defend her world title in Canada in March, so another rink will have the rare chance to represent Scotland instead.

Barr’s campaign does not begin until tomorrow, but Aitken faces a tough opener this evening against former world medallist and recent Aberdeen Open winner Lorna Vevers. Aitken had been having a successful season until last weekend when she bombed out in the quarter-finals of the European Junior Tour in Thun, Switzerland.

Ex-world junior champion Hannah Fleming, veteran Gail Munro, Aitken’s junior rival Jenny Martin and Jennifer Marshall are the other contenders this weekend.
