Murrayfield curlers Gina Aitken and Bruce Mouat have received a massive boost ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics after being told that they will be funded by UK Sport as part of the British Curling Mixed Doubles Programme.
The Edinburgh duo finished fourth at last season’s World Mixed Doubles Championship in Karlstad, Sweden where they earned nine valuable ranking points towards Olympic qualification. A similar performance at next year’s Worlds in Alberta would confirm Britain’s place in PyeongChang, Korea in 2018.
“This is a really exciting time for us, being the first mixed doubles pairing to be supported on this programme,” said Mouat, who also landed the World Junior title in Copenhagen in March. “We both know this investment will make a huge difference to us and will enable us to train together full-time, which we haven’t been able to do before. We’re striving to reach our first Winter Olympics, and it’s a great motivation to have that in our sights.”
