Racing: Sky Lantern shines brightest

Have your say

IT should pay to keep the faith with Sky Lantern as she clashes with old adversary Just The Judge once again in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot tomorrow.

Just half-a-length separated the pair in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, but punters have taken the view runner-up Just The Judge can have her revenge this time.

However, despite her subsequent Irish 1000 Guineas win, preference is still for Richard Hannon’s Sky Lantern, who has been kept fresh for this assignment. A Group One winner in a busy juvenile campaign, Sky Lantern shrugged off a disappointing return to action when powering out of the dip at Headquarters to grab the prize in the dying strides.

Both fillies enjoyed a clear passage that day and while Just The Judge had evidently improved for the run in Ireland, there is no reason to think Sky Lantern is not capable of a little extra herself.

Hannon’s charge appears able to handle most types of ground and she is the choice here, with Purr Along a likely placegetter.

Joyeuse, meanwhile, will bring the house down if she triumphs in the Albany Stakes for Lady Cecil.

A half-sister to Frankel, Joyeuse looked a really smart juvenile when winning at Lingfield, running green enough before the penny really dropped in the closing stages.

She eventually ran out a stylish winner without Tom Queally getting serious and looks another excellent representative from an outstanding family line.

At Redcar, Ingleby Angel can strike gold in Anderson Barrowcliff Celebrating 100 Years Handicap, while Market Rasen stage the National Hunt action and Brunswick Gold should go well in the GBA Group Handicap Chase.
