Edinburgh’s Doug Kempsell left Amsterdam empty-handed as Scotland once again had to settle for fourth place at the European Team Squash Championships.

The Scots faced Germany in a bronze medal play-off, as in Nuremburg last year, and looked set to avenge that defeat when Alan Clyne and Greg Lobban edged the opening two matches. Kempsell and Chris Small lost the next two, though, and the Germans took bronze 8-6 on countback after calculating total games won.

Kempsell scored crucial group wins over Italy and Switzerland but could not hold Jens Schoor, although his 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 defeat was deceptively close.

Kempsell admitted: “I’m really devastated for the team. I had a chance but blew it. I just couldn’t relax at all. I’m feeling pretty low but need to get sorted out now for my next competition.”
