Scottish curlers storm into quarter-finals

Have your say

Holders Scotland swept through to this evening’s quarter-finals after a high-pressure 8-2 win over Hungary at the European Mixed Curling Championships at Murrayfield Ice Rink last night.

Scotland skip Ewan MacDonald, Hungarian Gyorgy Nagy and Germany’s Andy Kapp all went into their final Group A matches with an identical record of six wins out of seven, but only two teams would be guaranteed a last-eight spot.

Defeat might have meant elimination, but the Scots booked their place after counting four stones at the third end and three more at the next to open up a winning 8-1 lead. Nagy eventually threw in the towel with four ends still to play, leaving MacDonald three games away from retaining his title.
