Elise Christie has won two titles at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Rotterdam, becoming the first British female to do so and taking over the mantle as overall world champion.
The Livingston-born skater took the 1500m title yesterday and followed it up with the 1000m crown today in the Netherlands. She also took bronze in the 3000m, but missed out on a medal altogether in the 500m final. Her performances overall were enough for her to become the world’s best on the ice.
Christie had podiumed seven times in the Worlds during her career, but this is the first time that she has claimed gold in any discipline. Her success was somewhat unexpected considering her season so far has been disrupted by injury.
