Edinburgh’s Doug Kempsell crashed to a shock first-round defeat at the Swiss Squash Open in Zurich last night.

The No.3 seed, seemingly in fine form after finishing third at the Scottish Championships, was expected to beat Israeli qualifier Daniel Poleshchuk, but he dropped the opening two games and was unable to salvage the situation despite winning game three.

The 21-year-old eventually went down 9-11, 9-11, 12-10, 6-11 in just under an hour, and Kempsell must now turn his attention to next week’s Geneva Open where he was runner-up last year.
