Edinburgh’s Craig Howieson will have to be at his best if he is to retain his title at the West of Scotland Table Tennis Grand Prix in Glasgow this weekend.
The Scottish No.2 memorably beat national champion Gavin Rumgay in last year’s final, but is seeded only fifth this time.
Rumgay is missing the event after his exertions in last weekend’s World Championship of Ping Pong in London, as is England’s Chris Doran, who leads the grand prix rankings.
But the event has attracted a star-studded line-up including China’s Xu Ruifeng, the top seed, and the likes of Welsh number one Ryan Jenkins and England international Darius Knight.
England’s Karina Le Fevre is top seed in the women’s singles.
