Edinburgh pair Alexandra Hunter and Millie Stretton both progressed in the Under-12 and Under-16 girls singles at the AEGON British national tennis championships in Bournemouth on a day when under-14 contender, Anastasia Mikheeva, crashed.
Miss Hunter was in decisive form beating last year’s Under-9 champion Sonay Kartal 6-2, 6-1 to cruise into today’s quarter-finals where she faces Louisiana Vine from Sussex.
Miss Stretton had already taken the opening set 6-3 when her opponent, Ceire Mullins, retired at 0-1 in the second set. Millie was due in action today against 11th seed Molly Reed.
For Mikheeva, last year’s under-12 champion, there was a crushing blow as she went down 6-2, 6-0 to Katie Swan.
However, along with Eden Richardson she is through to the quarter-final of the doubles. In the Under-12 girls doubles there was disappointment for Colinton twins Jessica and Charlotte Mair as they bowed out at the quarter-final stage.
