East of Scotland women made a flying start to their debut in Group One of the AEGON summer county cup at Eastbourne, beating Cheshire 6-3.

Captain Mhairi Beattie, partnered by US-based student Emma Devine, continued the form that had seen her help the East through all seven groups in successive seasons by winning three matches.

Sarah Mcfadyen, the only other player to have completed that journey, was also unbeaten in partnering Millie Stretton.

The East side was completed by Sonia Vickers and Jo Stevenson with junior Wimbledon prospect Anastasia Mikheeva due to join today. Group Two East men lost 2-7 to Derbyshire at Cromer as injuries and unavailability caught up with them.

Skipper Alan Macdonald and Sam Macneil won twice, including a third set tie-break, and on his county week debut, Andy Melrose of St Serf’s lost his first round alongside Euan McIntosh in three sets.

Austin Coventry and Steven McGuckin completed the East line-up with Scott Duncan due to reinforce the squad perhaps in time to today face Yorkshire, hammered 8-1 by Suffolk.
