Troon PA deprived City of Edinburgh of top seeding for the women’s Schelde Sports Scottish League play-offs with a straight-sets win over North Lanarkshire.
The Ayrshire side knew that even dropping a set would hand top spot to Edinburgh but they held their nerve to finish the regular season with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-21 win.
Both teams finished on the 40-point mark but Troon edged it on sets percentage (86.96 per cent to Edinburgh’s 85.42).
In an extraordinary climax, Edinburgh Jets secured third place as they came from two sets down to beat Su Ragazzi 23-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 16-14. The result means Ragazzi are fourth seeds in the play-offs.
City of Edinburgh’s final match with relegated South Ayrshire in the men’s division one was postponed but they were already guaranteed top spot.
Kilmarnock Blaze, the only team to have beaten the Capital side this season, beat Glasgow Mets 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 to finish second with their opponents third and Bon Accord making up the play-off quartet.
In the second division, City of Edinburgh II were pipped for the title by Dundee on the final weekend in the tightest of finishes. Dundee beat Bellshill Cardinals 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12 to take the title on sets percentage (80.00 per cent to Edinburgh’s 78.33 per cent).
