The Inter-Cities Cup is back at the east end of the M8 for the first time since 2013 after Mortonhall staged a rearguard action to deny Cawder a fourth successive victory in the event.

Played since 2005, the match is between the winners of the Edinburgh Summer League and the Glasgow equivalent, the Boundary Bell.

Mortonhall had earned the right to play in it on this occasion after becoming Edinburgh Summer League champions for the first time last season in the club’s 125th year.

Postponed at the end of last season due to poor weather, the 2017 match was played at Balmore, where Mortonhall recovered from being 3-1 down to record a 6-3 success.

Graeme Clark provided the Capital club’s sole point in the top matches before wins from wins from Harry Carruthers, Alex Main, Steve Scott, Ian Dickson and Chris Timms turned the tide at the bottom of the order.

The gutsy display saw Mortonhall become just the second side flying the Capital flag after Royal Burgess to lift the trophy since 2007, providing a perfect sign off for Graeme Stark in his stint as captain.

Dickson takes over the post for this season’s Summer League campaign, in which the defending champions are in the same group as 2016 winners Turnhouse.

Baberton, last year’s beaten finalists, start their bid to go one better at home to Newbattle.
