It follows Stephen Stuart’s side making home advantage count to eke out a 4.5-3.5 win over Duddingston, last year’s beaten finalists.

Ali Thurlow led the way with a thumping win over Scott Dixon but his younger brother, Stuart, was singled out for praise.

“In only his second game for us, Stuart came from two down to win on the last green at 17 years old, which shows great mental toughness,” said the Murrayfield skipper.

Bruntsfield Links, the 2014 winners, stayed on course in their bid to regain the title with a 5-3 home success over West Linton, for whom new recruit Marc Sadler produced the best golf of the night as he raced to the turn in 30, five-under.

“A vital win for us and an opportunity for some other squad members to represent the club as result of holidays and others preparing for the Lothians Championship,” said Bruntsfield Links team manager Douglas Livingstone.

Other winners in the latest round of matches included Royal Musselburgh, who beat Prestonfield 6-2.
