Musselburgh races: Seen The Lyte gets a confident vote

Successful as a juvenile last term for Yorkshire trainer John Quinn, the filly was bought by Quinn’s near neighbour Tinkler for just 1000 guineas at the sales in December.

It certainly looked a bargain price as Seen The Lyte had cost ¤24,000 as a yearling just over a year earlier and was successful last summer at Beverley and was also runner-up twice, as well as running with credit on several other occasions.

She had carried the colours of owners The Boys from Buckley last term and it is no surprise that they immediately bought back into her when she changed hands under the hammer for such a small price.

That proved to be the right move when she came back from a 172-day break to win last week at Catterick on her first run for Tinkler, who has his team in good shape.

Seen The Lyte has to carry a 6lbs penalty in the Racing UK Day Pass Handicap (7.40) and will be giving weight away to all her rivals, including Carpet, who chased her home last week. The latter is now 6lbs better off, but was beaten by a comprehensive thee lengths, so will do to turn the tables.

The third horse home that day was successful earlier this week to boost the form, so Seen The Lyte gets a confident vote to follow up.

Trainer Richard Fahey and jockey Paul Hanagan have always been a combination worth following and they look set to land a double, beginning with Amadeus in the Racing UK Handicap (6.10).

The grey has done all his racing to date on the all-weather and has shown ability, finishing third at Chelmsford in February when stepped up to ten furlongs and scored over an extra quarter of a mile at Southwell a fortnight ago.

The three-year-old had been gelded before that success and was returning from a two-month break, so some further improvement can be expected.

Fahey and Hanagan can also score with Scotch Myst in the Racing UK Profits Returned to Racing Handicap (8.10). Both of the four-year-old’s victories have come at Southwell and he clearly likes the fibresand surface, as he has also been runner-up twice there.

The latest of those wins came in all-the-way fashion last month, but the gelding has also shown form on turf, finishing third in a big field at Thirsk last spring when he was denied a clear run. He steps up to seven furlongs here, but stayed well enough when a close fourth at Newcastle in February on his only previous attempt at this trip.

Elite Icon is bred to really stay and relished the step up to a mile and three quarters when signing off last term with a success at Carlisle in September and can make a successful reappearance over that same trip in the Racing UK in HD Handicao (8.40).

Iain Jardine owns and trains the gelding, who got behind at Carlisle before staying on strongly through the final half mile to win going away, and a 6lbs rise in the ratings may not be enough for him to prevail again.
