Olympics: Catriona Matthew buoyed by Olympics experience

Catriona Matthew insists that while she wasn't able to deliver Great Britain a medal in the first ever women's Olympic Games golf tournament, her week has been highly beneficial.

The 46-year-old carded a one-under final round of 71 to finish level par for the tournament, placing her 29th overall in Rio.

A triple bogey at the 12th hole in her third round on Friday put an end to Matthew’s medal charge – she had been tied for 13th at the halfway stage.

Saturday’s round was a chance for the 2009 Women’s British Open champion to test out a few things to help improve her game, putting being the major focus.

And after walking off the 18th green with a smile on her face, Matthew admitted she is optimistic something may click before the end of the season.

“I played pretty well, I hit 16 greens and holed the odd putt, I probably should have holed a few more but it was a decent round to finish,” she said.

“To be honest, I was never in with a chance of a medal [in the final round] so it was just a chance to play some good golf shots and try something a little different to help my putting to try and help that.

“To finish with an under par round was great. The triple [bogey] at the 12th [on Friday] really knocked the stuffing out of me and other than that I played pretty well.

One more major remains this year – the Evian Championship starting on September 15 – and Matthew insists while she doesn’t have the fondest memory of the course, she can hopefully challenge for the win.

“I think I need to take that I playing well but I need to stay patient on the putting and hopefully they will fall one week,” she added.

The gold medal was won by Inbee Park of South Korea.
