Edinburgh judoka Sally Conway gathered vital ranking points on the road to the 2016 Olympics in Rio with a solid seventh place at the Tokyo Grand Slam, the final international tournament of the year

With seven of the top eight in the world competing in the Under-70kg event, the World No.7 knew she was up against it but beat Japan’s Haruka Yasumatsu in her opening night.

It meant facing Canada’s World No.3 Kelita Zupancic in her final group match, but the Canadian prevailed. Conway could have won a bronze medal through the repechage but she lost to German Laura Vargas Koch, the world No.2. France’s Gevrise Emane, the 2011 world champion, took the gold.

Edinburgh’s Sarah Adlington, the Commonwealth champion, lost in the first round of the Over-78kg to Japan’s Nami Inamori.
