Fife’s Liam Dunster came through a high-quality field to win the Edinburgh Open Pool Championship at the Shandon Snooker & Pool Centre.

Dunster won six matches in a field of 75 players to lift the title and a cheque for £600, overcoming Scotland’s No.1 player and defending champion Mark Boyle 5-1 in the final.

Dunster had to come from 5-4 behind to win three on the spin to defeat Edinburgh’s Paul Cruickshank to progress to the last 16, where he overcame Loanhead’s Danny Lunn 7-1. Further wins over Michael Collumb and Kevin McLeod – 7-1 and 7-4 respectively – took him into the final.

Edinburgh’s Chris Pringle performed best of players from the Capital, reaching the quarter-finals before losing out 7-2 to Boyle.

Tournament organiser Paul Cruickshank said: “It was another fantastic event and was a great opportunity for lots of the local players to play against some of the finest players in the game. However, Liam and Mark showed their class in the end to reach the final and Liam was a deserved winner. We look forward to making next year an even bigger success.”
