Mel Coutts, having guided City of Edinburgh to a domestic volleyball treble, was at the CEV Continental Cup in Baden, Austria today.

Coutts partners Great Britain Olympic indoor captain Lynne Beattie in Scotland’s top pairing for what is a qualifying round for next year’s Olympic beach event in Rio.

Coutts and Beattie have been training hard on Portobello beach and have also attended training camps in Greece and Spain since the turn of the year.

But they face a daunting task in Austria, having been drawn against Bulgaria, Ukraine and Russia.

The winners progress to next year’s finals, but the target for Scotland will be to finish in the top three and progress to the fourth round in August.

In the men’s competition, former City of Edinburgh player-coach Barry McGuigan partners Graham Riddle and, another former City of Edinburgh player, Robin Miedzybrodzki, who narrowly missed out on London 2012, partners Sean Cook.

Scotland face a similar challenge to the women and take on Russia, Ukraine and Norway.
