City of Edinburgh’s Mel Coutts has been recalled to Scotland women’s volleyball squad for this month’s European Championship Small Countries Division Finals in Liechtenstein – at 44.

Coutts was pivotal to the Capital club winning a domestic treble this season after missing the first half of the season through injury and, last week, helped Scotland’s beach team reach the fourth round of the CEV Continental Cup.

She won seven caps for Scotland in the 1980s but, when the Scotland programme suffered a ten-year hiatus due to lack of funds, she switched to England, who she was also eligible for. Coutts went on to captain the England team, including for a World Championship qualifying win over Scotland in Sheffield ten years ago.

She has been named alongside clubmates and GB caps Jo Morgan and Jennifer Thom in Scotland’s squad of 12 for Liechtenstein where they will face the Faroes, Cyprus and Luxembourg as well as the hosts.

Scotland reached the finals by finished second behind Cyprus in the qualifiers in Perth last June.
