Commonwealth Games hopefuls Seain Cook and Robin Miedzybrodzki claimed a silver medal at the Small Countries Division beach volleyball tournament at Portobello.

Seeded second, the Scots lost in the final to Finnish wildcards Jyrki Numinen and Santeri Siren 16-21, 10-21. Cook and Miedzybrodzi also gained a confidence-boosting 21-19 19-21 15-7 win over Cypriots Antreas Savvidis and Antonis Liotatis in a 58-minute third round match ahead of next month’s Commonwealth qualifying tournament in Cyprus.

Edinburgh’s Barry McGuigan and Graham Riddle almost pulled off an upset win over the Cypriots in the quarter-finals, losing 23-21, 15-21, 20-22.
