European champion Seonaid McIntosh missed out on a Commonwealth Games medal after finishing fifth on her debut.

Edinburgh-based McIntosh and sister Jen both won European titles last year, Seonaid’s coming in the 50m rifle three positions, but she could not emulate that success on the Commonwealth Games stage.

The 22-year-old, pictured inset, had shot 183.1 come the end of the fourth phase of the stage 2 elimination, giving her the worst score of the remaining five competitors – 2.6 points behind her closest competitor – in the final of the women’s 10m air rifle.

She had earlier qualified seventh best with a score of 410.4, putting her into the final. And she improved on that placing but could not do enough to make the podium.

Elsewhere in Australia, Scotland’s women’s hockey team beat Ghana 5-0 in their penultimate Pool B match.

Goals from Robyn Collins, Katie Robertson, Millie Brown, Amy Brodie and Nicola Alexander-Lloyd gave Scotland their first win of the tournament.

They now sit third in the pool with a final match against hosts Australia to come.

Robin Miedzybrodzki and Seain Cook finished second in Pool B of the men’s beach volleyball tournament following a straight-sets defeat to table-toppers Canada.

With wins against Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka already under their belt, the Scots went down 21-12, 21-17 to Samuel Pedlow and Sam Schachter in their final group game.

They now go on the face English pair Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf in today’s quarter-finals.
