Volleyball: Coutts’ return sparks City into life

Former England volleyball captain Mel Coutts made her comeback after knee surgery to spark City of Edinburgh’s season to life.

Coutts helped City stage a comeback from two sets down to beat Troon Team Ayrshire at Prestwick Academy 19-25, 18-25, 25-13, 25-15, 16-14.

The win keeps alive City’s hopes of retaining their title, although they will need other teams to do them a favour.

Coutts has not competed since a freak injury playing football in July last year, but her presence made a difference.

“There is no doubt she is a big influence on the team,” acknowledged Troon coach Vince Krawczyk. “No team has worked harder over the last few months to turn their season around and they looked physically stronger.

“Along with Mel and Great Britain caps Jen Thom and Jo Morgan, they look in formidable shape.

“We had an injury to a player which we tried to hide after the first two sets, but when they reorganised, we just couldn’t break them down.

“We missed two serves – at 8-7 and 13-12 up – and that proved costly.”

In the men’s first division, South Ayrshire, looking to win the title for the first time, beat defending champions Edinburgh Jets 25-21, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22.
