Capital teenager Archie Goodburn made a big splash at the British Summer Championships in Sheffield yesterday, breaking a British age group record twice and winning a gold medal.

The 17-year-old from Warrender Baths Club posted a time of 28.24 – at the time a new British record for the 17-year-old age group – in the men’s 50m breaststroke heats on day two at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

That made him fastest qualifier and gave him lane four for the final of the 17/18 years category race later in the day.

He could have felt the pressure, but the Stewart’s Melville pupil went even faster with a time of 28.04 to just edge out Gregory Butler of Derby (28.14) in a top quality race.

In the process he broke his own British record for the
17-year-old age group.
