Water polo: Portobello looking to make waves

Have your say

Portobello water polo club will play their first-ever home match in the British Championship tomorrow when they take on Bristol Central at the Royal Commonwealth Pool (8.00pm).

The tournament has previously been played at central venues and Portobello, drawn in a group of four from which two progress to finals in Lancaster on May 2-3, are hoping a home crowd can help them overcome the memory of an 8-4 defeat in their opening match away to Manchester last weekend. Completing the group are London Polytechnic.

The core Portobello team has been strengthened by players from Caledonia, in essence making a Scottish Select and joining regulars Bojan Donevski, Keith Anderson, Neilson and Fraser Rutherford, Tom Cramond and Ed Grundy are the Campbell brothers Ali, Chris and Darren plus Mark Speed, Andrew Woodall, Simon Metcalfe and Logan Shepherd.

This makes the backbone from the Scotland team that won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth tournament last year in Aberdeen.

Proceedings feature curtain-raisers involving Edinburgh University against Dunfermline and a junior game.
