Perfect start for Florence

Edinburgh canoeist David Florence made a perfect start to his Olympic qualifying campaign after back-to-back wins in both the C1 and C2 slalom trials at Lee Valley yesterday, writes LORIN McDOUGALL.

The 2008 Beijing silver medallist produced a flying second run to beat Dan Goddard and Adam Marshall in the C1 class, while Florence and Rich Hounslow also left it late in the C2 doubles as they went from fourth to first on the second run.

The Forth Canoe Club star now needs two more wins over the weekend to secure his Olympic spot in both events, but Hounslow warned: “You can’t take anything for granted.”

Florence added: “That was a good start, but there’s a couple more tough days to go.”
