Scotland’s oldest club recorded their first win of the season by beating Edinburgh University 76-71 on Monday night in the first-ever top-flight fixture at Forrester/St Augustine’s, and coach Scott Sanford was relieved to move on from their opening defeat by Boroughmuir Blaze.

“I think that’ll be a big confidence booster for the guys,” he said. “We’ve still got lots to work on, but we were pleased to get our first win after promotion last season. Hopefully we’ll make it two wins on Saturday. We’ve got Glasgow University, and hopefully we’ll do the university double.

“They lost their first game (83-34 to champions Falkirk Fury), but we don’t really know what to expect from them. They may have a new student intake this week and may bring in four or five new players. We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves and do the best we can.”

Boroughmuir had been due to play the Glasgow students last weekend before the fixture was rescheduled, so they will be raring to go when Glasgow Storm come to The Crags Centre tonight. Storm were competitive at Falkirk last week, going down by less than 20 points.

Women’s league champions City of Edinburgh Kings meet Polonia Phoenix at Gracemount High.

Kings launched their title defence with a big win last week over West Lothian Wolves. Edinburgh University open their season tomorrow afternoon against Lady Rocks.
