Rugby: Cairns ruled out for rest of the year

Edinburgh Rugby’s international centre Ben Cairns was today ruled out for the remainder of the year after injuring a knee in a pre-season friendly.

The former Currie ace was a member of Scotland’s provisional World Cup squad at the time but was released by coach Andy Robinson to turn out against Sale Sharks on August 19.

An Edinburgh spokesperson said: “Edinburgh Rugby can confirm that centre, Ben Cairns, will be unavailable for selection for at least 12 weeks following arthroscopic surgery on the knee he injured in the pre-season friendly against Sale Sharks.

“The time taken has allowed a full assessment of Ben’s knee with the outcome of the investigative ‘key-hole’ surgery a positive one, in that it revealed minimal damage to Ben’s anterior cruciate ligament which would have required a more invasive operation and a longer period out of action.”
