Rugby: Dundee on High as Currie glean crumb of comfort

A GUTSY second half effort by Currie in their final match of the season was not enough to halt RBS Premiership title chasers Dundee High – but Saturday’s contest yielded two bonus points, leaving Ally Donaldson’s side waiting to discover whether they will play British & Irish Cup rugby next season.

Trailing 31-10 at the interval, Currie showed great character to claim two bonus points from the 43-36 defeat and sit fourth in the league table. Jamie Forbes touched down twice and kicked 11 points, while Simon Marcell, Loma Kivalu and Mike Ent- whistle also had a try apiece for Currie. They must now cling to fourth place and hope Scotland is granted an additional spot in the cross-border competition.

Currie can still be caught by Stirling County who disrupted Boroughmuir’s preparations for this weekend’s RBS Cup semi-final with a 31-22 win over the Meggetland men. ’Muir led 10-9 at the break through a penalty try, converted by Ally Warnock, who also slotted a penalty. However two second half scores by Sean Crombie – the first converted by Warnock – were not enough to withstand an improved second half effort by the hosts that left the Capital men empty handed.

Watsonians completed their Premier B campaign with a flourish, running in seven tries to see off bottom side Hamilton 61-28. ’Sonians reached the break 23-17 in arrears but clicked through the gears after the restart to romp home. Ben Di Rollo bagged a double, and there was one apiece for Matt Henderson, Harris Grant, Paul Tuala, Dougie Brown and Dave Keenan, while Chris Martin kicked all seven conversions and four penalties.

Lasswade rounded off their Premier 3 campaign with a 31-25 win over Cartha Queens Park at Hawthornden after trailing 19-11 at half time. However, Haddington were on the wrong end of a 26-8 scoreline on their trip to face Greenock Wanderers.
