Rugby: Heriot’s end their season in sevens heaven at Jed

Cammy FERGUSON and Colin Goudie both scored two tries apiece in the final as Heriot’s ended their season with a win at the Jed-Forest Sevens on Saturday.

The Capital outfit have had a good sevens campaign, winning the Edinburgh Northern Sevens amongst others, and reaching the final of the Gala Sevens way back on April 7. And at the weekend they won their first Kings of the Sevens event of 2012, defeating Melrose in the final.

Jed may have won the overall Kings of the Sevens title, but Heriot’s’ victory means four of the ten events in the Borders were won by Capital clubs, with Watsonians having previously won three.

At Riverside Park, Heriot’s saw off Hawick, Edinburgh University and Gala to reach the final against Melrose. The Greenyards men defeated Hawick YM, Peebles and Watsonians to get there while Gala had shocked the hosts in the last eight.

In the final, Heriot’s came out on top 31-12, with Ferguson and Goudie’s tries being added to by one from Joe Hickman and three conversions by captain Graham Wilson.

Meanwhile, Boroughmuir lost out as Howe of Fife’s young team managed to secure the overall Legacy Sevens Series title after a day of high drama at the final event on Saturday.

The Fifers did not win the Glasgow City Sevens at Dumbreck – GHA did – but their victory in the Shield section meant that they accumulated enough points over the five events to beat Boroughmuir to the main prize.
