Rugby: Northern see off Leith to clinch title

Edinburgh NORTHERN clinched the RBS East Three title in style on Saturday with a 38-8 victory over long-term challengers Leith at Inverleith Park.

Edinburgh Northern captain Chris Aiken said: “It is great for the club to win a trophy and we have all worked really hard this season to get ourselves into this position.

“A number of new players joined the club last summer and some weeks we have had problems with some guys being unavailable, but we have a good spirit at Northern and we have managed to put together some good performances in the crucial last few weeks.”

Aiken confirmed that Paul Larter looks set to be head coach at the club next season, while now the players’ minds are focused on the club’s sevens event that takes place on April 21 in Inverleith Park and is always a great day involving many local teams.

Meanwhile, Musselburgh completed their National One campaign with a 74-0 win over Garnock. It leaves them two points ahead of Hawick YM, but the latter can win the division if they defeat RHC Cougars this coming weekend. RHC Cougars go into that match on a high though having secured an away win at Kilmarnock 25-22.

In East Two, champions Dunbar won 31-0 at Penicuik.
