Rugby: Penicuik survive sin-binning against Broughton to move on up in East Two

Penicuik put in one of their best showings of the season to defeat Broughton at the Public Park in RBS East Two on Saturday.

The season started dreadfully for the Midlothian men with big defeats to Dalkeith and Earlston, but things have started to improve and at the weekend they played some good stuff against the Wardie men.

Early on in the match when leading 3-0, the home side’s Adrian Donohue was yellow carded, but Broughton could not take advantage in those ten minutes and, with him back on the pitch, Penicuik went further ahead. Robbie McTaggart scored an unconverted try and they led 8-0 heading into the second 40 minutes.

With a Broughton player in the sin-bin Penicuik went 15-0 ahead soon after the interval. The score came from Steven Cunningham before Broughton posted an unconverted try.

Penicuik made the 27-5 bonus point win safe with further tries through Vondo Millard and Mark Ritchie.

Elsewhere in East Two leader Dunbar were held to a thrilling 27-27 draw at Dalkeith, while Moray House defeated Gala YM 27-16.

Preston Lodge are still unbeaten in RBS East One after a 46-10 home win over Duns with Trinity Accies, Portobello and North Berwick also posting victories. Forrester lost out to Hawick Linden 37-34 though.

Edinburgh Northern won 20-13 at Inverleith and have now won all six RBS East Three matches so far. Leith saw off St Boswells 35-8 at Academy Park, but Queensferry went down 29-5 at Walkerburn.
