Rugby: Scots fail to impress on home ground

Scotland sevens coach Graham Shiel will be looking for a substantial improvement when he takes his side to London for the final leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series at Twickenham after the hosts had a dismal weekend at the Emirates Airlines Glasgow tournament.

Among the few Scots to emerge with credit was former Edinburgh speedster Andrew Turnbull, who bagged three tries as the Scots saw off Kenya 19-12 yesterday to set up a semi-final showdown with Spain in the third-tier Bowl competition.

The former Watsonians winger was on target again in the clash with the Spaniards but that contribution proved insufficient to overcome a side that will become a core nation in the IRB Series next season, with Spain progressing 10-7.

Turnbull had touched down in the final match of the opening day, a 33-5 win over Russia. However, that win failed to offset earlier defeats against Wales and South Africa, condemning the Scots to the lower-tier event.

Shiel summed up: “We’re just disappointed we couldn’t deliver this weekend.”

In the finals, Russia beat Spain in the Bowl, Samoa saw off Wales in the Plate and New Zealand overcame England to in the main event.
