Rugby sevens: DAmien Hoyland shows potential as Boroughmuir clinch sevens

Teenager Damien Hoyland was on fire for Boroughmuir as they won their own sevens tournament at Meggetland last night.Hoyland, who has been part of the ‘Muir colts this season, certainly took his chance to show what he could do in the seniors as he ran in eight tries throughout the evening.

And Greg Jones weighed in with two scores in the final as they edged out Howe of Fife 26-24 and give themselves a boost for the rest of the Legacy Sevens circuit.

As well as Hoyland and Jones, captain Sam Johnston was impressive for Boroughmuir when things got tense towards the end.

In the pool stages ‘Muir recorded victories over Edinburgh University (21-7) and last year’s winners Glasgow Hawks (24-12), setting up a last-four meeting with Aberdeen Grammar.

Howe of Fife and Hamilton progressed from their pools to meet in the other semi.

In the last four match between Boroughmuir and Grammar the northerners took an early lead, but the speedy Hoyland and Iain Moody both contributed two tries as the home side eventually won 28-5.

Howe eased past Hamilton in their semi and the final was always going to be tight.

Tries from Hoyland and Jones put ‘Muir 14-12 up at the break in that final and then Jones’ second and one from Andy Rose ensure the trophy stayed at Meggetland.

Edinburgh University, with Rob Cuthbertson showing up well, reached the Plate final before going down to Dundee HSFP.
