Ben Atiga, the 31-year-old former All Black centre released by Edinburgh Rugby last season, is back in the fold after an apparent change of heart by coach Alan Solomons.
No media announcement has been made but details of an arrangement which sees Atiga return as “midfield cover” are on the Edinburgh website.
The move has led some to question whether injury problems are greater than previously revealed with others questioning the role of signed centres Phil Burleigh, Andries Strauss, Nick McLennan, Joaquin Dominguez and particularly young Scots Chris Auld, Michael Tait and Chris Dean with Matt Scott a known long term absentee.
A statement attributed to Solomons says: “Ben has played an invaluable role as an experienced player, ambassador and mentor to the younger players ... we’re pleased to welcome him back.”
Atiga scored a try at Gloucester last season but soon after made the last of 24 appearances over two seasons.
