Currie champing at the bit for a crack at Gala

With several key players attending a wedding, Currie will have an unfamiliar look when the Malleny Park men target a BT Premiership win at home to Gala (kick off 3pm) that would keep them on track for a play-off spot.

Home coach Ben Cairns has Glasgow’s professional props Ryan Grant and Mike Cusack at his disposal, offsetting the unavailability of John Cox and Alastair Hamilton. Ross Weston and Richard Snedden are also absentees.

Among the other changes is the return from injury of winger Ben Robbins for an encounter Cairns expects to be hard fought against visitors who are among three sides involved in the battle to avoid second bottom place and likely to be transformed from the team that succumbed 45-15 in the reverse fixture last October.

“Gala have hit some good form of late and we know we will face a completely different beast to the one first time around at Netherdale,” said Cairns. “It’s been a frustrating period for ourselves with the match last weekend cancelled meaning we haven’t played since the 19th of December. What it does mean though is our boys are well rested and champing at the bit to get back to business.”

Another of the trio battling for top-flight survival is Boroughmuir, who welcome a Glasgow Hawks side for whom a play-off spot is still possible. However, victory for Hawks would make no difference in the event of wins for Currie and Heriot’s, who host Stirling County (2pm).

In BT National Division One, Watsonians travel to face Dundee High with both promotion hopefuls looking to bounce back from losses against Jed-Forest and Edinburgh Accies respectively.

Accies are on the road to meet GHA, knowing that their mixed form earlier in the season means they must win all of their remaining fixtures to retain an interest in the race for the top two places.

Stewart’s Melville will look to build on their comfortable win over Musselburgh when they travel to meet Jed-forest, while Burgh meet Kelso at Stoneyhill.

Preston Lodge make the trip to face Cartha Queen’s Park, targeting a win that would sustain the Pennypit men’s interest in the BT2 promotion race, while strugglers Laswade must take something from their match at home to Hillhead/Jordanhill.

Haddington will be out to consolidate second place in Division Three when they take on basement side Irvine, and Livingston are at second-bottom Dalziel.
