Edinburgh confirm switch to BT Murrayfield for remainder of season

Edinburgh Rugby have confirmed they will play the remainder of their PRO14 home games this season at BT Murrayfield.

Richard Cockerill’s men, who were already due to face Munster on Friday, March 2 (7.35pm), will now host Ulster on Friday, April 6 (7.35pm) at the national stadium.

Their penultimate home game against Scarlets will take place at BT Murrayfield on the weekend of April 13-15 while they will round off the regular season with a home clash against Glasgow Warriors on Saturday, April 28 (kick-off tbc).

Edinburgh had been playing home matches at Myreside – home of Watsonians – this term and had been expected to line up there for three seasons.

However, last month the Evening News revealed Edinburgh were exploring the possibility of building an arena on the training pitches beside BT Murrayfield.

The club would create a temporary 6000-seat stadium, by shifting two stands from Myreside and adding extra seating, with a view to making it permanent if it proves a success. This would allow Edinburgh to play home games there as early as the start of next season with the club switching to BT Murrayfield itself until the smaller stadium is complete.

An Edinburgh statement confirmed: “The club recognises that alternating between venues does not deliver a consistent matchday experience for supporters, nor does it provide consistency for Richard Cockerill’s squad in generating successful results on the pitch. The move is part of a wider review of venue operations beyond the end of the current season.”

Edinburgh will also welcome Cardiff Blues to BT Murrayfield on Saturday, March 31 for a European Challenge Cup quarter-final.
